Notification Overview

CEN 02/2026 covers the recruitment of Technician Grade-I Signal (Pay Level 5) and various categories of Technician Grade-III (Pay Level 2) across all zonal railways and production units. The notification was first indicated in Employment News on 23 May 2026, with the detailed CEN and online application link hosted on the official websites of all participating RRBs. A separate application and separate CBT are required for each pay level — candidates interested in both Technician Grade-I Signal and Grade-III posts must apply twice and pay the exam fee separately for each.

The 25 Technician Grade-III post categories span departments such as Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, and Signal & Telecommunication, and include trades like Fitter, Welder, Machinist, Carpenter, Blacksmith, Millwright, Painter, Crane Driver, and Diesel/Electrical Technicians. Eight of these post categories have been grouped into Merged Post Categories (MPCs) to simplify the application process — candidates empanelled against an MPC may be assigned any of the merged designations under that category upon joining.

  • Technician Grade-III (all categories): 18 to 30 years

Standard age relaxation applies: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL, and higher relaxations for Ex-servicemen, PwBD candidates, and serving Railway/Group C staff, exactly as specified in the CEN.

Medical Standards

Each post category carries a specific medical standard — A3, B1, B2, or C1 — mainly relating to vision requirements. Technician Grade III Track Machine, for instance, requires the stricter A3 standard, while most workshop-based trades require C1. Full medical fitness details are listed against each post in Annexure A.

Selection Process

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) — a separate CBT is held for each pay level.
  2. Document Verification (DV) — shortlisting is done RRB-wise at 1:1 of vacancies, based purely on CBT merit.
  3. Medical Examination (ME) — conducted by Railway Administration as per prescribed medical standards.

There is no interview at any stage. Normalisation of marks is applied wherever the CBT is conducted across multiple shifts, and negative marking of 1/3rd mark per wrong answer applies to both pay levels.

CBT Pattern & Syllabus

📝 Technician Grade-I Signal CBT

90 minutes, 100 questions covering General Awareness, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Basics of Computers, Mathematics, and Basic Science & Engineering. Minimum qualifying marks: UR/EWS 40%, OBC-NCL 30%, SC 30%, ST 25%.

📝 Technician Grade-III CBT

90 minutes, 100 questions covering Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science (10th standard level), and General Awareness. Same minimum qualifying marks as above apply category-wise.

The subject-wise weightage, exact topic lists, and marks distribution for both papers are laid out in full detail in Section 16.1 of the official notification — this is worth reading closely before you start preparation, since General Science and Basic Science & Engineering carry the heaviest weightage in the Grade-III and Grade-I papers respectively.
