Picture a right triangle with one acute angle θ. Relative to θ, the three sides are: the hypotenuse (opposite the right angle), the opposite side (opposite θ itself), and the adjacent side (next to θ, not the hypotenuse). Six ratios can be formed from these three sides:

sin(90°−θ) = cosθ    cos(90°−θ) = sinθ    tan(90°−θ) = cotθ
